April Showers - Part Deux

Oh yes, today is officially the last day for those April showers. I can't really say we had much rainfall in the southwest part of the country this month, but we did enjoy some early flowers. While I love the cleansing quality of rain, it's generally the blooms that I like best.

It does seem as though it is getting a hotter than normal for this time of year. Sunday got up to 95 degrees! The only good thing about that? This chic grassy umbrella from Tray6. I love the idea of using this as a modern parasol until the summer monsoons. Another plus? It'll be adorable with those puddle stompers from the first April Showers post.

Make-Up Call

Back in March, I was given the task of make-up artist for my friend's wedding. Admittedly, I was a little nervous. I've got the perfect five-minute face down for myself - curled eyelashes, some blush, and a touch of bronzer - but a full make up application for one of my best friends on her wedding day? I needed to become a pro, and fast!

For a couple weeks, my five-minute face routine took a back seat. I did full applications every day, along with several practice runs on my friend. All this practice paid off, because she got lovely compliments on her make-up (whew!). One of the most important things? Great brushes. When I came across this brush set from Sonia Kashuk (available at Target), I was reminded of this. Her brushes are a great value - affordable and good quality. This kit has the basics, and comes in a fab little silver and black clutch to boot.

More Bollywood Bliss

I've been holding onto some lovely rainbow moonstone for months now, and finally put them to some good use. These tiny faceted rondelles are meticulously wrapped around a handmade hoop which is about 2" in diameter (the earrings are about 3" long from the top of the ear wire). Although I was pretty happy with how it looked at that point, the design didn't quite feel finished to me. When I realized I had more moonstone briolettes, I thought hanging them from flat cable chain would do the trick. I must say, I am incredibly thrilled with the Bollywood style results!

I'll be adding these onto the site soon. If you don't think you can wait until then, no worries! Just contact me and we can arrange a PayPal transaction.

Yellow footed fever

I can't help it - I love these gorgeous pale yellow flats from Irregular Choice. From the braided detail to the strange four legged little guy near the heel, these shoes embody funky charm.
I've mentioned it before, but I love colorful shoes. They're a really fun way to punch up your wardrobe. Just imagine how these would pair with a fab pair of skinny jeans and a stripey nautical top. Adorable!

Flowery lights

In the spirit of Earth Day, I figured I'd post about these lovely little light chains from the earth-friendly shop, Branch. Handmade in Germany from wool and low-wattage LED bulbs, these lights are an interesting way to subtly illuminate your home.

Branch is definitely worth checking out for those of you who are interested in sustainable living. The production (and eventual destruction) of the products they sell have a low impact on the environment - what better way to keep the spirit of Earth Day alive than that?

Annie, Get your Gunn!

OK, so maybe your name isn't Annie, but if you share my affection for Project Runway, you'll want to run out and get the new book from the one and only Tim Gunn.
Chockablock (if you get the book, you'll see that this must be one of his favorite words) with witty fashion advice, valuable wardrobe editing techniques, and several words that require the use of a dictionary, you're sure to emerge just a little more fabulous than when you started.

April Showers - Part I

Although I'm still months away from the desert monsoon season, I can hardly wait for it to arrive! Long gone are the days of boring old rain boots - I'm happy to report that these fun and colorful puddle stompers from Plueys have taken their place.Go Fish is my absolute favorite pair - how could you not love those little goldfish? Completely adorable. Check out the other styles available from this fabulous indie label right here.

Rose is rose

I adore this funky laser cut acrylic rose brooch straight from Fuzz Design Workshop. So sleek and graphic - it's available in red, black, silver mirror and gold mirror. Personally, I love the silver mirror.

This cool site is definitely worth checking out though - they're loaded with cheeky jewelry and accessories. A couple other favorites? The gansta necklace and the barrel of monkeys necklace.

Gardens in a Bag

I've always loved gardens, but unfortunately, can't have one in my apartment. While I totally get why it would be a bad idea, this is the perfect solution to get my green fix.

The leakproof bag comes sealed, and all you have to do is mix the seeds with the soil and watch it grow. They have a variety to choose from like alpine strawberry (yum!), lavender, and organic basil (shown). Another cool touch? You can order them in lieu of greeting cards - plants with "Thank you", "Congrats", and "Just Because" labels are all available for purchase. How cute is that? Check them all out right here.

Celestial Charm

I've always loved these silk charm necklaces - and I'm happy to say they are one of my best sellers! I have a navy set in my personal stash and layer them together on casual days.

The simplicity of these necklaces make them perfect for everyday wear, but the crocheted silk adds just a hint of a luxury. Available in either espresso or navy with your choice of a petite gold-plated sun or star charm.

A little note

I've been looking around for some mom-worthy Mother's Day cards, and I am happy to say that I found the perfect place for all my card needs in the process. Located in the lush Northwest, Turquoise has been making their lovely collection since 2001.

Ladybugs is perfect for this upcoming Mother's Day! I also really loved the asiana and everyday collections as well. Take a look for yourself, and have a great weekend!

Art with Heart - Avalisa

I was so happy to come across the bright and colorful artwork of Avalisa recently. My favorite part? Each piece is available in a variety of coordinating color schemes, which makes mixing different pieces together a breeze. Just imagine how impressed your friends will be when they see how flawlessly you've assembled your very own exhibit of modern art!
It was really tough to pick just a couple to showcase, but I did my best! Both prints are from the imaginations collection, and first up is the budding tree in pink. The contrast of the tiny, almost lonely twigs that hold these bright and vivacious budding flowers is just precious. I also really love bubbles in sea green. So light and airy! Avalisa isn't just interested in making your home beautiful though; the company donates art work to Cure International hospitals to bring uplifting surroundings to disabled children in developing countries. Care to make a donation yourself? No problem. You can purchase pieces specifically for donation on the site. Art with heart, people. Gotta love it!

Oh So Vein

Upon first glance, these unusual earrings by Annette Ferdinandsen appeared to be very odd antlers. Then I looked at the caption. I never would have guessed! As strange as it seems, you have to admit that the end result is a lovely rendition of human anatomy.

They have an interesting organic, sensual quality that really draws me in. Actually, that statement applies to many of the designs from Annette. I also really love her orchid earrings, and the amazing turquoise egg ring.

The sneak peek for the web site this week is my new gorgeous druzy pendant necklace.

What is druzy, you ask?

Druzy is the dusting of tiny crystal formations inside a geode. To get to the sparkly goodness inside, a geode is cut to expose these delicate crystals. For jewelry purposes, it is then cut and shaped accordingly. As you can see, the result is dazzling!

Since each pendant has a different shape, each necklace is truly one of a kind. Another cool touch? Turn it over, and you'll find that the other side doubles as a faceted nugget pendant.

For those of you that work in super conservative environments that don't allow lots of sparkle, this is a fabulous piece that will make your day to night transition flawless!

Anthropologie Major

Anthropologie has always been one of my favorite places to check out, whether it's the brick and mortar shop or the on-line version. I was happy to see their lovely selection of furniture on my last visit!

My favorite piece on the entire site right now is this beautiful bee console table from Philadelphia designer Iannone Sanderson. The bright white is so fresh, and is just stunning with the gilded graphic. I'm convinced it will look beautiful under my metallic copy of Klimt's The Kiss which is hanging in my dining area.

I also really loved this funky and colorful needlepoint pheasant ottoman. It reminds me of a vintage footstool that I got from an antique shop in the Little Ethiopia area of L.A. a few years back.

By the way, if you happen to be searching for some fashionable seating, they are running a promo right now that you might be interested in: 25% off on all upholstered furniture through April 30th!

Alicia Bock Photography

I think I've said it before, but I'll say it again - I love Etsy! It's a completely amazing online marketplace that has and awesome selection. It reminds me a little of the Pike Place Market in Seattle - except that it's open to the entire world.

It was on Etsy that I came across Alicia Bock, an amazing photographer who has the ability to capture images with dream-like qualities that are truly lovely.

While all of her photographs are breathtaking, I was especially drawn to her images of nature - particularly anything with flowers. I've always loved the quiet beauty of flowers, and look forward to spring because of it. Two of my favorite prints are Baby Blue (above, right), and Delicate Balance (below, left).

She has a really nice web site you can check out, as well. Take a look, and have a great weekend everyone!

The fabulous K. Baker

Nature and mystical creatures in jewelry has always fascinated me, so when I came across the fanciful work of jewelry designer K. Baker recently, I had to share. A piece that really caught my eye was this bold and unusual octopus ring, which is also available in silver. Brilliant!

Another amazing piece is this phoenix necklace, available in silver or gold. Fire is my element, which probably explains why I've always liked these mythical creatures.

Check them out along with the other lovely accessories available at the on-line boutique calliope.

Sweet Relish

I am happy to say that the site feature for today is a Portland-based business! I have fond memories of my hometown, and always love to give a shout out to the amazing people that make it such a interesting place.

Relish has been around since 2001, and is located in the charming Pearl district in downtown Portland. Although they focus on modern and unique accessories for the home, they also carry some pretty cool jewelry. My favorite were these funky sterling silver diamond rings. They also have acrylic versions available. I love the idea of stacking the two styles!

They also have a cool selection of bedding and and tableware. I especially love the twig duvet in peakcock/cocoa, and the double tea set. Adorable!

Our new look!

I finished the new header yesterday, and couldn't wait to add it to the blog! Let me know know what you think.

I knew I wanted some versatility with the design, so I kept that in mind as I went. I figured even my blog would love a little makeover every now and then. In the finished product, the color scheme and jewelry can easily be changed to for upcoming seasons and new collections.

Check back tomorrow for a a post about a cool Portland-based home accessories shop.

They're actually gold-plated

Right about now you might be asking yourself, "Someone really plated sneakers with gold?" Well, the surprising answer is yes and here they are in all of their gilded glory: the new bonafide gold-plated kevlar kicks from Puma. The cost? A mere $455.00.Even though I was slightly horrified when I first laid eyes on them, I've come to the conclusion that I'd actually wear them if they didn't cost a healthy chunk of my rent. In fact, I'd even wear them if they weren't gold-plated! I've always been fond of my metallic kicks. Maybe when I'm as rich as, say Warren Buffet (and of course after I solve world hunger and make affordable health care available worldwide), then wearing gold-plated shoes is totally OK. But probably only then for me.

I know you may not have fully formed your opinion on gold-plated sneakers, most likely because you didn't know they existed. You have to have one by now. I gotta know what you all think about this one!
